- Every one else around you wants you to stop smoking, but do you really want to stop?
- When you want to stop smoking are you confused by all the therapies out there?
- Which one you choose will depend on your understanding of these therapies!!
Hypnotherapy & NLP can work in one day to help you become a non-smoker!
I am a Clinical Hypnotherapist and NLP Practitioner in Berkshire with five years’ experience helping people become non-smokers, so I can explain how Hypnotherapy and NLP has helped people all over the world to stop smoking - Full Stop.
Let’s forget about the smoking bit for the moment and observe what you are doing when you are with a cigarette between your fingers….. Your eyes are gazing in the far away, your mind is floating in a world of its own and you seem to be in a trance…. Or you are in the euphoric company of friends, colleagues at work and you are feeling a sense of belonging to a group of “smokers”. Basically smoking has become unconscious with you now… you do not choose to smoke consciously because if you could do that, you’d hate the mere taste of that substance!
Cigarette, nicotine or any other substance you smoke has gained a deeper psychological meaning for you than just being a physical act and that is why it is so difficult to stop. Most of the time we are using tools and techniques which convinces the conscious, logical brain for a little while but the unconscious brain( where our habits, our instinctive behaviours are stored and from where they controls our reflexes) stays with the same psychological perception and need for smoking. So you convince your mind with self-affirmations which hold for a little while but your unconscious brain still has the psychological need and it will take you back there sooner or later.
For example: a client says “I need to stop smoking because I am getting married and I want kids!”
I ask her “what comes to mind when you see a cigarette?” She answers “my enemy number one; I feel so frustrated and angry that I am wasting my health and wealth”
I ask “what comes to mind when you imagine yourself smoking?” She answers “it is just a habit but honestly speaking I feel normal when I keep it going; if I miss one in the day, I start feeling as if something really wrong is happening and I feel so moody!”
What is happening with most smokers is simply that consciously they know all the good reasons to stop smoking; they themselves logically know all the arguments against smoking but THEY STILL CANNOT STOP THE HABIT. Why?
How does Hypnotherapy/Neuro-Linguistic Programming help with stop-smoking?
Hypnotherapy and NLP target the unconscious brain where our habits and instinctive responses are stored and triggered e.g. from breathing to cycling to driving, all these good habits become unconscious and effortless with time and practice. The same process works for bad habits like smoking, binge drinking, alcoholism, overweight issues.
Simply because our habits become unconscious with us as the days change into months and then years and this is true for both good and bad habits. Take driving, take cooking, and take dancing for example…. You start doing it consciously, with effort and concentration then gradually as you become competent these habits become unconscious with you and you drive, dance or cook without even thinking or putting any effort. The same happens for bad habits like snacking after dinner or having cup of coffee at bedtime or that first cup of tea in the morning.
Logically we know we do not need that cup of tea or that snack or that cigarette, yet unconsciously for our brain it has become a source of comfort, relaxation, stress-release, freshness or just “normal” as part of our routine.

Why is Hypnotherapy so effective in helping you become a non-smoker?
Countless independent research studies continue to prove this fact year after year. A 2005 study of 72,000 smokers from Europe and the US, reported in the Journal of Applied Psychology, showed that hypnosis came top as the most effective therapy in helping people to give up smoking.
Simple…. Observe a non-smoker around you… they don’t even see the smokers around; they don’t smell it or focus on the smell of cigarettes; they do not see the packets of cigarettes in the shops or supermarkets at all! Whereas with you the smoker, because your unconscious brain is so attuned, with all your senses to cigarettes, the smell, look, even the talk/topic of it and you are craving for one. The answer is to delete it completely from your unconscious brain and hypnosis works directly with the unconscious brain.
The unconscious brain learns what is pleasurable and what is painful for us and then set triggers to recognise them; once it senses a painful trigger coming along your way it sets off the “flight or fight” response which in human beings set the motion of inner sensations of panic, running , sweating or freezing.
With smoking it started years ago by becoming pleasurable directly or because of the gratifications it was giving you: social acceptance, belongingness, stress relief, looking good, feeling more confident, staying silent etc… now that you want to stop smoking it has become a source of pain; the more you try to avoid it and resist it, the more your unconscious brain is feeling alarmed and triggering the tension in your body and mind. The more the tension… guess what? The more the need for a cigarette to reduce that tension… then the guilt for having had yet another one increases the resistance …and then guess what? The cycle of tension/resistance and then giving in/indulging into another cigarette carries on.
As your Hypnotherapist in Reading, Wokingham and Windsor, covering Berkshire my job is help your unconscious mind lose that trigger from deep within. Once the unconscious brain learns to look at cigarettes as just physical things sitting on the shelf and has no reaction to it, you find that you stop seeing, smelling or talking about cigarettes, just like a non-smoker.
Your unconscious brain no longer desires that cigarette unconsciously; rather you find that the day goes by without even the thought coming into your mind. This is true about whatever is not relevant for you…think about it… if golf is not important for you, you look at the golf course and move on more rapidly than someone who loves it. The same starts happening with cigarettes, you find you are not thinking about it, feeling the need for it or even smelling it around you anymore.
With your unconscious brain having unlearnt and let go of the image of you as “smoker” you are a non-smoker and there is no half measure with smoking or not smoking is there?

Who is the Hypnotherapist / NLP Practitioner?
My name is Amreeta Chapman and I am trained by the London College of Clinical Hypnosis as well as by the UK Academy of Therapeutic Art and Sciences for my Hypnotherapy and NLP Training.I am a Member of the BSCH (British Society of Clinical Hypnosis) as well as the GHR(General Hypnotherapy Register) and I have been in practice for five years now. I specialise in Mental and emotional issues and over the years have helped my clients coming for depression, anxiety or weight loss with smoking issues as well. They often find that despite getting over their anxiety and low self-esteem the smoking stays as a very bad habit and then one session targeting only stop- smoking and it’s gone; they become non-smokers!
As a stop-smoking therapist I understand your hesitation in investing so much money but when you realise that very passively you are spending five times more than the fee you pay every year in smoking it makes sense to reflect on what you can do with the recovered health and wealth in your hands after becoming a non-smoker e.g. more holidays, skiing, going out, feeling healthy and proud to walk into any public place without looking for a corner where you can smoke!
Last word of advice: only contact me when you want to stop smoking; only you can stop but since the habit and need has become unconscious now you will need to tackle it in your unconscious mind and that’s where you need me; a hypnotherapist who knows the tools and techniques of how to get in touch with and work with the unconscious mind!
